How to Find Hidden Items in Open World Games
Open world games hide their best content in unexpected places. Here is how to find the items and areas that most players miss.
Look for Environmental Clues
Game developers rarely place secrets randomly. Hidden items are almost always marked by subtle environmental clues. Look for objects that look slightly different from their surroundings: a wall with a different texture, a rock formation that seems unnatural, or a light source in an unexpected place. Once you train your eye to notice these inconsistencies, you will start finding secrets everywhere. This applies to virtually every open world game from Zelda to Elden Ring to Skyrim.
Explore Off the Beaten Path
The main quest path in most open world games is designed to be obvious. Secrets are hidden on the paths you are NOT supposed to take. When you reach a fork in the road, go the wrong way first. When you see a cliff edge, look for a way down instead of continuing forward. Developers reward curious players who explore beyond the intended path. Many open world games use a system where certain secrets are only accessible after you unlock specific abilities or items later in the game.
